Iraq to Select New Prime Minister

Consultations Continue in Iraq to Select New Prime Minister

The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, continues to hold intensive consultations with the leaders of the political blocs, popular and social activities, academic elites, trade unions and professional federations, and various segments of society for the purpose of assigning a candidate to the presidency of the Council of Ministers with the support of the people.

Saleh stressed during his ongoing consultations the necessity of adopting the constitutional contexts and specific timelines, to ensure that the head of the new government takes over the task of managing the transitional phase, leading to parliamentary elections held under a fair election law, and managed by an independent election commission.

The constitutional context, according to the requirements of Article 76 of the Constitution, obligates the political blocs in Parliament to present their candidates, provided that the mandate comes from the President of the Republic.

The President of the Republic stressed during his meetings that communication, dialogue and consultation between parliamentary blocs in order to adopt the nomination of the appropriate person for the position of Prime Minister should be consistent with the aspirations and legitimate demands of the Iraqi people, and that the new government obtain the political and popular support required to implement the necessary reforms in preparation for the conduct of fair elections.
